In the 12th century, mariners discovered that a naturally occurring magnetic ore called lodestone, when floated on a stick in the water, tended to align itself with and point towards the polestar. By determining which way was north, any other direction could then be determined. To date, the compass remains beyond dispute the primary navigational device on the face of the earth.
